Who we are

Jim Salter is the founder and owner of First Ascent Tree Service. He has provided safe and professional Arborist services in northwestern Ontario communities for over a decade. He is professionally certified by Arboriculture Canada Training & Education Ltd. and carries liability insurance for his services.

Jim came to tree work from two unique and complementary backgrounds. He worked 14 summer seasons as a MNR Fire Ranger where he gained 100s of hours operating a chainsaw, in addition to teaching chainsaw courses to fire personnel. During the winter months, Jim worked 14 seasons as a Professional Ski Patrol and Mountain Rescue Technician, where he became proficient in technical rope rigging and climbing. Ten years ago, he combined these skills into an Arborist career. Jim also works locally as a Paramedic with NWEMS when he is not climbing trees.

Please do not hesitate to contact Jim about your trees!

Ground crew

A man wearing a red helmet, ear protection, gloves, a white t-shirt, and black and red work pants is cutting a tree trunk with a chainsaw. There is a woodpile on a small structure in the background.

Depending on the size and nature of the job, we offer Ground Crew support. Trained and committed to safe work, they assist with technical rope rigging and clean up of wood and brush materials. Ground Crew who operate chainsaws carry Chainsaw Operators Certification.
